Goodbye Elon. For now.
Saturday, May 22, 2010
Too many wonderful photos were taken before, during and after Commencement...none of which I actually took. But I pick this family photo hands down because I love it SO much. It's one of the best ones we've ever taken together.

My parents arrived at lunchtime on Friday for a Communications reception and Leaders of the 21st Century where all the fellows were recognized. After that, my mom took today's photo of the day - a beautiful swan in Lake Mary Nell.

Every week, usually on Tuesdays, Rachel and I would have a Subway date. We'd catch up on life, talk about our job hunts, and just bond over stories of love, drama and gossip. I will never forget those lunch dates...they helped me get through my week.

A thousand a day...167-168
An amazing day at Biltmore (more photos to come)...which is why I skipped Monday's photo - I knew I would have too many to pick from today!

22. Not that bad after all...
Thanks to my incredible family and friends, this birthday was a truly marvelous one. And I'm pretty much STILL celebrating 15 days later. I still think 22 is a scary age, an age where you have to be a "real person" so to speak, but it's not so bad when you're surrounded by the people you love most in life. And then those people make me feel truly loved, which makes a birthday so much more than could be expected. So much more.
1. Dinner with Rebecca, April 28
Rebecca gave me just the pep talk I needed to realize 22 is not the end of a life of fun. It's just an age and it just makes me a real person. And there are SO many wonderful memories and opportunities ahead.
2. Nerdy Journalism Movie Night, April 29
After a half-hour of sleep the night before, and a full day of FutureWeb conference, I was not feeling human. But it was Nerdy Journalism Movie Night, where a dozen of my favorite people in the universe gather at my apartment for a journalism movie. We're all just sitting around my living room waiting to start "State of Play" and all of a sudden, Rebecca emerges from the hallway with a cake all lit up in HAPPY BIRTHDAY candles. It was wondrous. And I had no idea what was coming...I even let her, Sunshine, Pam and Gabby in the door when they were carrying the cake!
3. Big surprise from Amalexa, awesome show, pre-birthday greatness, May 1
The day before my birthday began with me getting blindfolded and carted off to a surprise destination with Amanda and Alexa. Let's just say that was a cultural experience. ;-) Then, we went to see "i.d.," a show written, directed and produced by our friend Christopher Staskel. It was part of his honors thesis and lumen prize and it was absolutely breath-taking. I had goosebumps the entire time not just because of how incredible the play was but because of the thought that one of our classmates envisioned and WROTE the show.
4. The Big Day, May 2
I began my day by doing two things I love - shooting video and helping a friend. I helped Justine shoot her music video for class and had so much fun. The lighting was perfect for her movie that morning and her video turned out GREAT!! She did such a good job on the lyrics and her vision for it!
My family came down and we got to walk around campus and bond all day long. We went to Iron Gate for a wine tasting - they just had to experience my favorite winery on the planet. We had a wonderful lunch at Mellow Mushroom and dinner at Red Bowl, two of favorite restaurants.
At church, everyone sang Happy Birthday to me, something I was not expecting...and probably blushed.
That night, Justine came by and surprised me with the most delicious marble cake with chocolate icing. SO good. She is wonderful.
5. Surprise Dinner, May 7
After going to Target and Barnes & Noble and the post office with Pam, I arrived back at my apartment to find my incredible friends and the table set for a surprise birthday dinner. And then I realize I was being distracted and stalled from returning to my apartment. I just couldn't believe my birthday could get more magical. Sunshine made reallllly yummy sour cream chicken enchiladas, and Jack, Rebecca, Pam, Laura and I had a wonderful dinner together. I LOVE my friends.
In conclusion
I have the most incredible family and friends ANYONE could ask for. So many blessings.

A thousand a day...157-161: Can you tell it's finals week?
"A thousand" (pun intended) apologies for being so late on posting my thousand a day photos! This is one of the worst finals weeks ever. Two huge video projects, three exams, two take-home essays, senior communications exit exam and a producer reel to finish between now and Friday. I will really be saying TGIF when it arrives and I am DONE with my undergraduate career...as scary as that sounds right now.
Something I've been doing the past few days is posting my photo of the day in addition to posting a fun photo (or a few), not necessarily taken by me, that shows a memorable moment from that day. In keeping with that new tradition, I am also including photos of the highlights of each day.

This semester, a bunch of us Pendulum people have gathered for weekly "Nerdy Journalism Movie Nights" at my apartment. It has been so wonderful to get together every week despite the gobs of homework everyone has, and having our last movie night was very bittersweet. We ended with "All the President's Men."
I'm counting this as my photo of the day since I tripoded the photo, so I technically took it. ;-)

Our annual Cannon Celebration was Monday night. It's a gathering for everyone in the Isabella Cannon Leadership Program and it's really special for the seniors because we get to display our legacy projects and showcase what we spent our year working toward. We also get our stoles for graduation at the end of the evening.
Earlier in the afternoon, though, I interviewed President Lambert for his story in my book of Elon leaders (appropriately for my legacy project). It was a very leadership-filled day.

Catholic Campus Ministry has a picnic to honor its seniors every year, so this was my year to celebrate, however sad that may be, with yummy cookout food and cake.

Today, I attended my first Elon baseball game. I can't believe it took me four years to get to a game, but it was on the bucket list and now was the time! I went to the game with Conor to shoot video to accompany his story and we also got to hang out with Corey after we left the press area to stand behind third base for a better view. It was an interesting experience shooting baseball - certainly not as thrilling as fast-paced football or volleyball, but a good experience nonetheless. And thanks to Conor, I now understand some baseball lingo!
My favorite moment came after the game when Scott Riddle was swarmed by little kids asking for his autograph. I grabbed this still off the video camera since it was such a precious moment.
I had the wrong lens for taking sweet photos at the game, but I wanted to snap a few pics anyway. In one of them (again, wrong lens), I caught the ball in motion! Woo! Of course, it's nothing compared to real sporty photographers, but an exciting moment in the life of Ashley anyway.
There was much fun to be had after the game as well, when Corey and I returned to the office so I could edit the video and he could post his photos. When Pam visited, Corey and I were throwing a rave in the vault with the help of Camille, who served as photographer and chief lighting engineer (she flicked the lights on and off for us to give us a true clubbin' feel).
We tried to make Pam feel as comfortable as possible.

Small Things Matter: Bay St. Louis
I had a busy CELEBRATE! Week this year. I presented my research from Seoul on SURF day and I also participated in the service learning presentations. I took the four hours of video I shot during my spring break doing service in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and combined it with the two hours of post-break in-studio interviews with my fellow spring breakers, and put together this 9-minute video! I like to think of it as the trailer to the bigger video I'm making for all of us to watch together on Reading Day. That will be my weekend project!

A thousand a day...155 & 156
Friday, May 7, 2010
CCM seniors with Father Gerry at our wonderful senior dinner (cooked by T with 'junior' helpers and waiters).
I spent the afternoon outside between Long and Alamance shooting video interviews for our Leadership Fellows presentation for "Leaders of the 21st Century" (the night before graduation). In my downtime between interviews, I decided to take photos around my favorite spot on campus.
Thursday, May 6, 2010
Though I didn't take the photo (Sunshine did), this photo sums up the greatness of Thursday...and the greatness of mine and Josh's relationship.
I didn't even realize I kind of caught the lightning in this shot (bottom right corner) since I was just going for the beautiful clouds! So even though it's blurry, I wanted it to be my photo of the day simply because it's my first lightning shot...I'll be sure to experiment with a tripod next time.

A thousand a day...147-149: FutureWeb
These past three days were filled with the future of the Internet! A big group of Elon students traveled to Raleigh each day to help cover the FutureWeb conference, spearheaded by Janna Anderson. We tweeted, shot up-to-the-minute/near-live Flip video, logged longer clips for the Imagining the Internet site, blogged and wrote full-length stories. It was an intense few days of work with some of my favorite fellow journalists.
Today's photo is compliments of Jack Dodson. We got to enjoy our kabob lunch outside in the beautiful weather...
SO many Macs!
And some photos for fun!
